Alternative Medicine Treatments From Herbalism to Hypnosis
Alternative Medicine Treatments include any kind of treatment that is not tried and tested conventional medicine. This is, of course, a large category of healing methods and includes anything between herbalism and hypnosis.
Many alternative medicine treatments rely on substances such as plant extracts or mineral salts to restore the balance of the constitution of the human body. Where properties of plants are used it is known as herbalism (and Ayurveda in India). These properties have deep roots in age-old cultural traditions and beliefs across the world. Most of these beliefs are rooted in long-term observation and methodical records if not exactly scientifically explained.
Some alternative medicine treatments, while being part of age-old traditions, also have nothing to do with physiology except with the psychological aspects of it. They involve meditation techniques to concentrate energy and will power.
Again, some other traditionally inspired alternative medicine treatments involve the use of physical exercises and breathing techniques (for example, yoga) to relax oneself. Some alternative medicine treatments involve alternative theories of how the human body functions. Acupressure, for example, is one such practice which has neither been proved nor disproved. Some alternative medicine treatments are not so much based on tradition but on a different approach to modern medicine. Homeopathy treats the disease by triggering the immune system to pick up and fight it.
Different experimental theories often develop into healing techniques. Color therapy involves the potential of a visual color stimulation to change and influence a persons mood. Some alternative medicine treatments that have been proven enough of times include psychotherapy.
These different kinds of treatments can be broadly classified into four areas: The alternative medicine treatments that deal with the communication between the mind and the body. Alternative medicine practitioners believe that the mind and the body have to be in stable harmony to be healthy. Such treatment options include relation techniques, meditation, prayer and art therapy. The use of natural substances like plant extracts, etc that help to bring back the balance in the constituency of the body. Body-based manipulation approach. These include massage or acupuncture. The regulated flow of energy to complement the cycle of energy that already exists in the body. This category includes energy healing, reiki, Etc.
Although no proof of the effectiveness of alternative medicine treatments really exist, more and more conventional physicians are opening up to the possibility of there being something in the idea. Especially when treating terminal patients that conventional medicine has no hope for, many doctors venture to suggest alternative treatment options. However, there are still many crusaders and many arguments on the other side as well.
The primary argument against alternative medicine treatments is the fact that none of the theories has been or can be proved. The effectiveness of the treatments is inconsistent and some scientists fear that because alternative treatments are not subject to being tested for side effects, they may have rather harmful ones.
