Alternative Herbal Medicine – a Natural Option for Healing?
Alternative medicine encompasses all healing techniques that do not fall under conventional medication. Alternative herbal medicine relies on substances produced by plants. These substances are beneficial to human health and include aromatic compounds like phenols or their derivatives like tannins. Some secondary metabolites – substances that the body will not die without but which are necessary for the continual health of specific organs – are also extracted from plants to use in alternative herbal medicine.
Alternative herbal medicine has a long history – and prehistory. Since time immemorial, man has been depending on plant properties to help heal himself. The earliest known proof of herbal medication was a medicinal herb found on a 3500-year-old caveman.
Different cultures around the world have their own histories in alternative herbal medicine. Ayurveda, for example, is the name given to herbal medication as practiced by the Aryans in India. Mankind has always been coming across the properties of certain plants and certain substances produced by plants. He has been recording his observations and putting them to use. Ritual and superstition are embroiled in the ancient alternative herbal medicine practices, but they are also founded on years of careful observation and research.
Today, man has the technology required to break down the properties of the plant extracts they’ve always used. The exact chemical compositions of the extracts used in alternative herbal medicine is known today, and it has also therefore become possible to theorize exactly how the medicine helps heal an ailing body.
However, alternative herbal medicine has not been scientifically tested and therefore no proof exists of its effectiveness. There is an ongoing debate about the effectiveness and validity of alternative forms of medicine, with many passionate speakers and arguments on either side.
Around 80 per cent of the entire population of the world is dependent on alternative herbal medicine. The reasons for this may lie in the fact that conventionally manufactured medicine is very expensive. Also, people tend to trust in age old traditions that they’re cultures have followed throughout the ages.
Many pharmaceutical companies also use plant extracts and traditional herbal medicines. People tend to trust in nature – and there is a common misconception that anything natural is good for you. This is not true: many plants produce toxins and other substances that harm the functioning of the human body.
However, seldom does age old traditional herbal healing go wrong. Alternative herbal medicine depends largely on this collective archive of information about the property of plant extracts for its research base.

In the near future, we shall either prove or disprove the validity of herbal medicine – but till then there are millions of people who trust their lives to this kind of treatment and believe wholeheartedly in its effectiveness.
