Alternative Medicine – and The Quest for Authenticity
Conventional medicine consists of scientifically tested and proven medications. Anything that does not fall under this category is known as alternative medicine – a treatment option that more and more people are turning to nowadays.
There is a huge ongoing debate about alternative medicine, its practicality and effectiveness between users and non- believers. One must be aware that alternative medicine has shown results – but not proven their effectiveness scientifically.
Alternate medicine is a very generalized term and includes a large number of medicinal options from homeopathy to hypnosis. The only ideas that tie all these different treatment options together are the fact they are ways of healing and the fact that they are not theoretically proven in terms of science and research.
Millions of people, however, swear by alternative medicine and believe that it is a more natural and more effective solution to their health problems. The supporters of alternative medicine have millions of cases to demonstrate how the treatment works. The supporters of conventional medicine argue that there is no consistency in the effectiveness of alternative medicine and hence, there is no proof that it works.
Of course, some researchers believe that the belief in the solution is more important than the solution itself. And millions of people all over the world swear by ayurvedic medicine, yoga, acupuncture, homeopathy, herbalism, naturopathy, hypnosis and other such varied forms of alternative medicine. Some alternative forms of healing are based on scientific theory that is very difficult to prove. These are exceptional cases where healing uses scientific knowledge but is still unable to back itself up with modern science.
Some alternative forms of medicine have deep roots in the cultural heritage of different peoples around the world. Alternative medicine from old world cultures is highly dependent on the healing properties of natural substances like plant extracts. Some forms of alternative medicine concentrate on healing through the mind, specifically the use of relaxation and concentration techniques.
Many people use alternative medication along with conventional medicines. Some studies have shown that this can have harmful effects. The reasons for this are not very well defined. It could be that the use of alternative therapy results in the suppression of conventional medicines and vice-versa. Alternative healing has proven to have relaxing if not proven healing effects. And there are many cases which believers in alternative healing cite to prove the effectiveness of the treatment option.
Conventional medicine needs to be tried and tested for results and side effects before being released into the market. Alternative medicine has no such strings attached. This is why many scientists have problems with alternative medications. However, most alternative healing techniques involve the use of natural extracts, mind healing or energy healing methods that do not have side effects that are as adverse as those of allopathic medicine. However, not all natural substances are potentially harmless and all forms of treatment processes can have physiological or psychological side effects. One must be fully aware of all the complications involved in different methods of healing to choose their treatment options for themselves.
